I read something about Sumatra today...

...and it reminded me of a conversation I had a few years ago.

New found friend: So where are you from?

Me: Samoa

NFF: Errr... where?

Me: SA-moa, it's in the Pacific

NFF: *nods in supposed acknowledgment* whoa, that's far isn't it?

Me: Yep, but it's paradise (whaaaaaaaat? I gotta promote it no?!?)

NFF: *lights up* Sooo.... how has Sumatra dealt with the post-tsunami situation?

Me: *blank stare* Umm excuse me?

NFF: Yeah, how has your islands and its people dealt with that... it must still be very difficult...

Me: *another blank stare before I feel the urge to smack him up the head*

yep. that my friend is a classic example of the obscurity of my paradise. And that's not to mention the countless "Is that in Africa?!" or "Ooooh Somalia!!!" or "Near Japan right?" I've encountered.

All right, happy week... this Sumatran's gotta eat! :)

You are not the only one in touch with ignorants. My country is a little bit bigger than yours and people usually don't know much about it.

Once I heard from a stupid US citizen (I don't say American because Mexicans, Canadians, Brazilians and Argentinias are Americans the same way people from USA)...

Well, he said: "Is 'Brazilian' similar to Portuguese the same way Spanish is similar to Portuguese?"

"Actually, we speak Portuguese..."
